Dongeng dari Jambi ( A Tale from Jambi )

( Batu Panjang is a village in the district of Kerinci, Jambi. Apparently there is a legend behind the formation of the Batu Panjang village. )

( A long time ago, in Sungai Jernih village, there lived a poor little girl. “Grandpa, can I have the fish for my dinner?” asked the little girl. The Grandfather replied, “Ask your Grandmother for it!” )

( Then the little girl asked her Grandmother, “Grandma, can I have the fish?” The Grandmother told her to ask for it to her Father. )

( The little girl immediately asked her Father. But she got the same answer. “Go ask your Mother!” said the Father, disappointed the little girl. )

( The little girl was getting even more disappointed when she asked her Mother for it,  but her Mother simply replied, “Go ask your Brother!”
The little girl cried sadly alone on top of a rock in front of her house, as she looked at the full moon. )

Sambil menangis, gadis kecil itu menyanyi. Setiap selesai menyanyikan satu bait lagu, batu yang ia duduki bertambah tinggi. ( While crying, the little girl sang. Every time she finished singing one verse of the song, the rock that she sat on got higher.)

“Tinggi… tinggilah engkau batu, biar Kakekku senang, biar Nenekku senang…” “Tinggi… tinggilah engkau batu, biar Ayahku senang, biar Ibuku senang…”   “Tinggi… tinggilah engkau batu, biar Abangku senang, biar saudaraku senang…” ( “Higher… rock gets higher, let my Grandfather happy, let my Grandmother happy…” “Higher… rock gets higher, let my Father happy, let my Mother happy…”    ”Higher… rock gets higher, let my Brother happy, let my siblings happy…” )

( The little girl continued to sing until the rock touched the moon. The little girl stepped her feet on the moon. As she arrived on the moon, the little girl kicked the rock. It fell to the Earth and extended on a hillside. Finally, the hills are now called as the Batu Panjang.)

( The little girl’s family was sad that she left them forever. They were sorry for not giving the little girl a fish for her last dinner on Earth. )
