Diceritakan kembali dari Fabel Aesop (Retold from Aesop’s fable)
Pada suatu malam di musim panas, singa penjaga hutan yang berani, menemukan gua yang nyaman dan sejuk. (On one summer night, the brave lion that guarded the forest found a comfortable and mild cave.)
“Setelah bekerja seharian, akhirnya aku menemukan tempat yang enak untuk tidur!” serunya. Singa pun tertidur. (“After working all day, I finally found a nice place to sleep!” exclaims the lion. The lion fell asleep.)
Pluk! Tiba-tiba seekor tikus jatuh di kepala si singa. “Aduh! Berani sekali kau menggangguku, tikus kecil! Aku akan memberimu hukuman berat!” seru singa. “Maafkan aku, wahai singa yang gagah berani! Aku tidak sengaja terjatuh!” Cicit si tikus ketakutan. (Thud! Suddenly a rat fell on the lion’s head. “Ouch! How dare you to disturb me, little rat! I’ll give you a severe punishment!” exclaims the lion. “Forgive me, O brave lion! I accidentally fell!” squeaks the rat in fear.)
“Hei, ada apa ribut-ribut?” tanya seekor kelelawar yang tertidur dengan tubuh terbalik. “Kelelawar, aku tidak melihatmu tidur di gua ini!” seru singa terkejut. (“Hey, what’s with the fuss?” asks a bat sleeping with his body upside down. “Bat, I didn’t see you sleeping in this cave!” exclaims the lion, surprised.)
“Gua ini milikku. Tetapi kau kubiarkan tidur di sini singa, karena kau sangat lelah. Nah, jika aku yang pemilik gua ini tidak merasa terganggu dengan si tikus, mengapa kau harus terganggu?” tanya kelelawar. “Jika kau membebaskan aku singa, aku berjanji akan membalas budi baikmu,” kata tikus. (“This cave is mine. But I’ll let you sleep here lion, since you’re so tired. Well, if I the owner of this cave don’t feel bothered by the rat, why would you have to feel bothered?” asks the bat. “If you release me lion, I promise to repay you,” says the rat.)
Karena singa merasa malu pada kelelawar, akhirnya ia membebaskan tikus. Singa tidak pernah lagi memikirkan janji si tikus. (Because the lion was embarrassed towards the bat, he finally freed the rat. The lion never thought again of the rat’s promise.)
Suatu hari, kawanan pemburu binatang, datang ke hutan tempat singa tinggal. Para pemburu binatang itu menangkap si singa dengan alat pembius kemudian menjualnya ke tempat sirkus! (One day, animal hunters came to the forest where the lion lived. The hunters caught the lion using anesthesia equipment then sold him to the circus!)
Singa yang baru tersadar, sangat terkejut mendapati dirinya berada di dalam kurungan dengan keempat kakinya terikat tali. Dia mengaum keras. Tetapi manusia di sekitarnya hanya tertawa, tidak berteriak ketakutan. “Singa, mulai sekarang kau bukan lagi hewan buas, tetapi hewan sirkus!” kata mereka. (The conscious lion was very surprised to find himself in the cage with four legs tied by ropes. He roared loudly. But men around him were just laughing instead of screaming in fear. “Lion, you’re no longer a wild animal but a circus animal!” they say.)
Ketika malam tiba, singa memandang bulan dengan sedih dari kandangnya. “Apakah aku akan bisa memandang bulan ini dari hutan lagi?” bisiknya. (When the night came, the lion looked at the moon sadly from his cage. “Will I be able to look at the moon from the forest again?” He whispers.)
“Tentu saja bisa!” kata suara mencicit yang mengejutkan singa! “Tikus kecil!” seru singa. “Aku datang untuk menyelamatkanmu singa!” bisik si tikus. (“Of course you can!” says a squeaking sound that surprised the lion! “Little rat!” exclaims the lion. “I come to save you, lion!” whispers the rat.)
Si tikus menggigiti keempat tali yang mengikat kaki-kaki singa, dan membuka kurungan. Singa bebas! (The rat bit the four ropes that bound the lion’s legs and opened the cage. The lion was freed!)
Keesokan harinya, singa dan tikus sampai di tepi hutan. “Terima kasih tikus, berkat dirimu, aku selamat! Maafkan aku yang selama ini tidak menganggap serius janjimu!” kata singa. “Aku selalu menepati janjiku!” seru tikus sambil tersenyum. (The next day, the lion and the rat arrived at the edge of the forest. “Thank you rat, because of you, I’m saved! I’m sorry I didn’t take your promise seriously all this time,” says the lion. “I always keep my word!” exclaims the rat with a smile.)
Sejak saat itu, singa dan tikus bersahabat dan selalu saling membantu satu sama lain. (Since then, the lion and the rat became friends and always helped each other.)
