Cerita dari Bangka Belitung (Story from Bangka Belitung)

Di sebuah desa, tinggallah sepasang suami isteri. Waktu berlalu, mereka pun menjadi tua dan akhirnya berhenti berharap memiliki seorang anak. Mereka menjalani kehidupan dengan penuh syukur. (In a village, there lived a husband and wife. As time passes, they became old and finally gave up their hope to have a child. They lived their life with gratitude.)

Suatu hari, Pak Inda-si suami, pergi mencari ikan di laut. Adapun sang isteri-Bu Tumina menanam padi di sawah. (One day, Mr. Inda the husband went to the sea looking for fishes. As for the wife, Mrs. Tumina planted paddies at the field.)

Saat sedang berjalan, tiba-tiba Pak Inda tersandung sepotong bambu. “Bambu yang aneh..warna hijaunya sangat terang dan bersih,” kata Pak Inda. Dia melempar bambu itu ke tengah laut agar orang lain tidak tersandung. (When he was walking, suddenly Mr. Inda was tripped by a piece of bamboo. “A weird bamboo.. Its green color is very bright and clean,” says Mr. Inda. He threw the bamboo to the sea so that other people won’t get tripped.)

Pulangnya, Pak Inda kembali tersandung sesuatu. Alangkah kagetnya, ternyata yang membuatnya tersandung adalah bambu yang tadi dibuangnya. (As he walked back home, Mr. Inda was tripped again by something. He was very surprised to see that he was tripped by the same bamboo that he had thrown earlier.)

“Baiklah bambu aneh, aku akan membawamu pulang!” kata Pak Inda. Bu Tumina lalu menyimpan bambu itu di dalam kotak rotan. (“Alright weird bamboo, I’ll take you home!” says Mr. Inda. Mrs. Tumina stored the bamboo in a rattan box.)

Keesokan harinya, mereka terkejut ketika mendengar tangis bayi dari kotak rotan! Ternyata bambu itu telah berubah menjadi seorang bayi perempuan! (The next day, they were surprised to hear a baby crying from inside the rattan box! It turned out that the bamboo had turned into a baby girl!)

Mereka menamainya “Puteri Gading” karena kulitnya yang seputih gading. Ketika beranjak remaja, mereka menambahkan kata “Pinang” karena tubuhnya yang tinggi, ibarat pohon pinang. (They named her “Puteri Gading” because of her ivory skin. When she was teenager, they added the word of “Pinang” because of her tall body, like a pinang tree.)

Puteri Pinang Gading dididik menjadi gadis yang pintar, pemberani, dan baik hati. Dia berbakat di bidang bela diri serta sangat terampil menggunakan busur dan panah. (Puteri Pinang Gading was educated to be a smart, brave, and kind girl. She was good in martial arts and highly skilled with the bows and arrows.)

Pada suatu hari, seekor burung Rajawali besar membuat kekacauan. Karena tidak ada yang berani melawan, Rajawali itu semakin sombong dan jahat. (One day, a big eagle made ​​a mess. Because no one dared to fight it, the eagle became more arrogant and evil.)

Puteri Pinang Gading pun menantang si Rajawali. Dia memanah sayapnya. Dia  tidak melukai Rajawali itu, hanya membuat tiga helai bulunya terlepas.  (Puteri Pinang Gading challenged the eagle. She hit its wing with an arrow. She didn’t hurt the eagle; she just made its three feathers fell.)

Si Rajawali ketakutan dan tunduk pada Puteri Pinang Gading. Rajawali itu pun tidak pernah datang lagi. (The eagle feared and surrendered to Puteri Pinang Gading. The eagle had never come again.)

Penduduk desa sangat mengucap syukur dan berterimakasih kepada Puteri Pinang Gading atas keberaniannya. (The villagers were very grateful and thanked Puteri Pinang Gading for her braveness.)
