“Nyanyian Gabu,” jawab kakek. (Lala the little girl lives in Fruit Island, a beautiful island that produces fresh and tasty fruits. “Our island is rich in fruits,” says Lala’s grandpa proudly. “What makes our fruits grow vastly?” Lala asks. “The singing of Gabu,” replies grandpa.)

(Gabu is the statue of a bulbul perching on top of the tall pillar on the mountain top. Before the harvest season, Gabu will sing beautifully. The singing of Gabu makes the fruits grow and ripen perfectly.)

Suatu malam, Lala mendengar nyanyian merdu dari puncak gunung. “Itu pasti nyanyian Gabu! Indah sekali, aku juga ingin belajar menyanyi,” seru Lala. (One night, Lala hears a beautiful singing from the mountain top. “That must be Gabu singing! So beautiful, I also want to learn to sing,” says Lala.)

“Gabu! Aku Lala. Maukah kau mengajariku bernyanyi?” tanya Lala. “Aku tidak bisa, Lala. Aku sedang dihukum,” jawab Gabu. “Mengapa kau dihukum?” Lala kembali bertanya. (The next day, Lala goes to the mountain top to meet Gabu. “Gabu! I’m Lala. Will you teach me how to sing?” Lala asks. “I cannot, Lala. I am being punished,” Gabu replies. “Why are you punished?” Lala continue asking.)

“Dulu aku pernah makan buah-buahan tanpa ijin. Kakekmu sang kepala desa sangat marah. Lala sangat kasihan mendengar cerita Gabu. (“I once ate fruits without permission. Your grandpa the village chief was angry. He cast a spell on my and turned me into a singing statue so that the fruits can grow well. I’m so sorry, but your grandpa won’t forgive me,” Gabu shares his story sadly. Lala felt bad hearing the story from Gabu.)

Dia lalu pergi menemui kakeknya. (A couple of days later, a sad singing is heard from the mountain top. Lala who is hearing the sad singing also shed a tear. “I must help Gabu!” says Lala. She then walks to meet her grandpa.)

(On her way, Lala passes and looks at a fruit garden.”All of the fruits are rotting!” Lala mumbles. “Grandpa, please help Gabu. Forgive him, his heart is in sorrow because of the long punishment. Gabu’s beautiful singing has turned to sadness, makin all the fruits rotting!” Lala begs her grandpa. “I undertand, I too feel guilty for relying on Gabu’s singing for so long,” says Grandpa.)

(Lala and her grandpa climb to the mountain top. Grandpa frees Gabu from his spell. “Thank you Gabu, please forgive us who have forced you to sing,” says grandpa. The freed Gabu then teaches Lala how to sing.)

(Then, Gabu flies away to gather with his friends. Lala then teaches the singing Gabu taught to the villagers. Today, the villagers of Fruit island can sing their own songs to grow tasty fruits!)
