Dongeng dari Jepang ( A Tale from Japan)
Zaman dahulu, ada seorang tukang akrobat kera keliling. (Di Indonesia dikenal dengan topeng monyet). Si tukang akrobat bermaksud menjual kera peliharaannya yang sudah tua. (A long time ago, there lived a traveling acrobatic monkey-man. (In Indonesia it is known as the topeng monyet). The acrobatic monkey-man intended to sell his old monkey.)
“Kera ini sudah menjadi binatang bodoh! Dia sudah lupa semua akrobat yang kuajarkan untuk menarik penonton!” seru si tukang akrobat. (“This monkey has become stupid! He already forgets all the acrobatic movements I taught him to attract the audience!” exclaims the acrobatic monkey-man.)
Si kera sangat sedih. Ia bermaksud membalas dendam. Ia bertanya pada seekor gagak, siapa yang bisa membantunya untuk membalas dendam. “Hmm, coba temui si babi hutan!” sahut gagak. (The monkey felts very sad. He wanted to revenge. He asked a crow on who can help him to revenge. “Well, try to see the wild boar!” says the crow.)
Kera menemui babi hutan dan menceritakan kisahnya. “Bantulah aku untuk membalas dendam, wahai babi hutan!” tangis kera. “Pikirkan baik-baik, kera. Andaikan balas dendam-mu gagal, apa yang akan terjadi? Kau akan dibenci, diburu, dan dimusnahkan!” seru si babi hutan. (The monkey met the wild boar and told him the story. “Help me to take revenge, O wild boar!” cries the monkey. “Think about it carefully, monkey. Suppose your revenge fails, what will happen? You will be hated, hunted, and destroyed!” exclaims the wild boar.)
“Jadi, apa yang harus kulakukan?” tanya kera. “Berbuat baiklah! Buktikan kalau dirimu masih berguna bagi majikanmu…aku ada ide!” bisik si babi hutan. (“So, what do I have to do?” asks monkey. “Do good! Prove that you are still useful to your Master…I have an idea!” whispers the wild boar.)
Si tukang akrobat mempunyai seorang anak perempuan yang masih bayi. Dia sangat menyayangi anak satu-satunya itu. (The acrobatic monkey-man had a daughter who was still a baby. He really loved his only child.)
Pada suatu malam, terjadi hal yang mengerikan! “Anakku diculik oleh seekor babi hutan!” tangis si tukang akrobat. Para tetangganya hanya bisa gemetar dan menangis. Mereka tidak mungkin masuk ke hutan malam hari karena di sana sangat menakutkan! (One night, a terrible thing happened! “My daughter is being kidnapped by a wild boar!” cries the acrobatic monkey-man. The neighbors could only tremble and cry. It’s impossible for them to go into the woods at night because it’s very scary there!)
“Ada sosok yang menuju ke sini dari dalam hutan!” teriak seorang tetangga. “Itu kera milikku! Dan…dia menggendong puteriku! Dia menyelamatkannya dari si babi hutan!” seru si tukang akrobat terharu. Dia segera berlari dan memeluk si kera dan anak perempuannya. (“There’s a figure come towards here from the woods!” shouts a neighbor. “That’s my monkey! And…He is holding my daughter! He has rescued her from the wild boar!” exclaims the acrobatic monkey-man feeling moved. He immediately run and hugged the monkey and his daughter.)
“Terimakasih…terimakasih kera…aku tidak akan membuangmu! Maafkan aku!” tangis si tukang akrobat. (“Thank you…thank you monkey…I’m not going to throw you away! I’m sorry!” cries the acrobatic monkey-man.)
Keesokan harinya, kera menemui si babi hutan. “Idemu berhasil babi hutan! Kau benar, ternyata satu perbuatan baik bisa melenyapkan kebencian!” kata kera.(The next day, the monkey met the wild boar. “Your idea is a success wild boar! You’re right, it turns out that one good deed can eliminate hatred!” says the monkey.)
