“Hmm… aku ingin tidur sebentar ah,” pikirnya. (On one sunny day, Mouse deer rests under a shady tree. “Umm… I want to take a quick nap,” he thinks.)

“Kancil! Kancil!” Tiba-tiba terdengar suara. Kancil terkejut dan membuka mata. Dia melihat Pipi si kelinci putih melompat-lompat ke arahnya. (“Mouse deer! Mouse deer!” Suddenly, a voice is heard. Mouse deer is startled; he opens his eyes. He sees Pipi the white rabbit jumps toward him.)

“Ada apa, Pipi?” tanya Kancil. “Aku dengar kabar dari kepala desaku, bahwa Singa si raja hutan memintaku untuk jadi santapannya!” ujar Pipi sedih. (“What’s wrong, Pipi?” asks Mouse deer. “I heard from my village head that Lion the king of the jungle wants me to be his dishes!” says Pipi sadly.)

“Gawat sekali!” seru Kancil. “Aku mau bersembunyi seumur hidup!” kata Pipi putus asa. “Tidak bisa, kita harus menghadapinya. Aku akan menolongmu!” kata Kancil. (“How awful is that!” exclaims Mouse deer. “I want to hide forever!” says Pipi in despair. “You can’t, we have to deal with it. I’ll help you!” says Mouse deer.)

“Kalau begitu, kau bisa memulainya dengan berbicara pada si utusan raja besok siang,” kata Pipi. “Sekarang ikutlah denganku ke perkampungan landak!” ajak Kancil. (“Then you can start by talking to the king’s messenger tomorrow afternoon,” says Pipi. “Now you come with me to the hedgehog village!” invites Mouse deer.)

“Untuk apa, Kancil?” tanya Pipi. “Agar kau bisa selamat! Singa si raja hutan, takut pada landak!” seru Kancil percaya diri. (“What for, Mouse deer?” asks Pipi. “So that you can survive! Lion the king of the jungle is afraid of hedgehogs!” exclaims Mouse deer very confidence.)

Kancil menemui si utusan raja, seekor macan hitam. “Aku membawa perintah resmi dari sang Raja untuk si kelinci Pipi. Dia harus ke istana hari ini!” ujar macan hitam. (Mouse deer meets the king’s messenger, a black tiger. “I bring an official order from the King to Pipi the rabbit. He has to go to the palace today!” says the black tiger.)

Kancil menjawab dengan sedih, “Saya merasa terhormat, tetapi sayang sekali, Pipi si kelinci ternyata memiliki penyakit aneh!” Si macan hitam terkejut, “Penyakit aneh?!” (Mouse deer replies sadly, “I feel honored, but unfortunately Pipi the rabbit has a strange disease!” The black tiger is surprised, “A strange disease?!”)

“Iya, penyakit aneh yang menyebabkan bulu-bulunya berubah menjadi seperti ini saat ketakutan,” kata Kancil sambil menyerahkan sehelai bulu landak kepada macan hitam. (“Yes, a strange disease that causes his spine turns into something like this when in fear,” says Mouse deer as he hands the black tiger a hedgehog’s spine.)

“Bulu landak?” seru si macan hitam. “Benar sekali, tuan macan. Setelah diselidiki, ternyata kelinci Pipi memiliki darah landak dari leluhurnya!” kata Kancil. “Mengerikan sekali!” ujar macan hitam. (“A hedgehog’s spine?” exclaims the black tiger. “Yes it is, sir tiger. After having been investigated, it turns out that Pipi the rabbit has a hedgehog’s ancestor!” says Mouse deer. “How awful!” says the black tiger.)

“Wahai Kancil, aku berterimakasih padamu karena telah mengabarkan berita ini. Sudah jelas bahwa Singa yang mulia tidak bisa menyantap Pipi! Nah, selamat siang!” ucap macan hitam seraya berlalu. (“O Mouse deer, I thank you for giving me this news. It is obvious that my majesty Lion can’t eat Pipi! Well, good afternoon!” says the black tiger as he passes away.)

Kecerdikan Kancil sekali lagi berhasil menolong sahabatnya! (Since then, Lion has never asked again for Pipi to be his meal. The cleverness of Mouse deer has managed to help his friend!)
